- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 2 cups grated sharp Cheddar cheese
- 3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 1/2 cup water
Topping:
- Grated Parmesan cheese
- Poppy or sesame seeds
Grease or line a 13x992-inch baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, cheese, and butter or margarine in a bowl and mix well. Add the water a little at a time to make a very stiff dough.
On a lightly floured surface, roll pieces of the dough into "sticks" slightly thicker than pencils. Cut the "sticks" into 4 or 5-inch lengths and flatten out. Arrange on the baking sheet. Sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese, poppy and/or sesame seeds.
Bake at 400F for about 10 minutes or until browned.
To make the straws crisper, reheat for 5 minutes just before serving.
Make 4 dozen.
